Coral extension rate analysis using computed axial tomography
نویسندگان
چکیده
Biology, geology, and paleoclimatology studies of coral reefs often rely on annual rates corallite extension determined from cores skeletal material recovered scleractinian corals. To examine how orientation within such may affect measured rates, we used high-resolution X-ray computed axial tomography (CT) to image a suite short Orbicella faveolata corals living in the northwest Gulf Mexico. This nondestructive method enabled be several ways: (1) along transects that cross individual slice/slab images, (2) both 0.6-mm-thick CT slice corresponding conventional 8.4-mm-thick slab material, (3) slices/slab images oriented at varied angles relative core’s longitudinal axis. Additionally, true three-dimensional (3D) corallites were compared apparent two-dimensional (2D) slice/slab. Results suggest differences between all methods are not statistically significant, confirming rate methodology is suitable for if axis appropriately aligned with growth corallites. Effects core misalignment measurement appearance structures 2D described, applicability 3D imagery investigations polyp patterns colony development demonstrated.

Basic principles of computed axial tomography.
Computer tomography (CT) is a radiological imaging method which yields transverse tomographic images reflecting with high accuracy the spatial distribution of x-ray attenuation in the part examined. The contrast resolution achieved by CT permits the visualization of soft tissue structure heretofore invisible with conventional radiographic procedure. The CT image is reconstructed by a computer a...
متن کاملPrediction of Extrathyroidal Extension Using Ultrasonography and Computed Tomography
Objectives. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the value of high-resolution ultrasound (US) and computed tomography (CT) scan for preoperative prediction of the extrathyroidal extension (ETE). Methods. We analyzed the medical records of 377 patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) with preoperative US and CT scan to calculate the sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negat...

متن کاملPrecision of quantitative computed tomography texture analysis using image filtering
Quantitative computed tomography (CT) texture analyses for images with and without filtration are gaining attention to capture the heterogeneity of tumors. The aim of this study was to investigate how quantitative texture parameters using image filtering vary among different computed tomography (CT) scanners using a phantom developed for radiomics studies.A phantom, consisting of 10 different c...
متن کاملNondestructive analysis of urinary calculi using micro computed tomography
BACKGROUND Micro computed tomography (micro CT) has been shown to provide exceptionally high quality imaging of the fine structural detail within urinary calculi. We tested the idea that micro CT might also be used to identify the mineral composition of urinary stones non-destructively. METHODS Micro CT x-ray attenuation values were measured for mineral that was positively identified by infra...
